Tàpies grew up in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood, where his early experiences and personal relationships began to shape the man and the artist he would become. In 1981, the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Council) commissioned an artist to create a monument dedicated to Pablo Picasso, on the occasion of the centenary of the Malaga-born artist's birth. This work, titled Homenatge a Picasso (Homage to Picasso), was installed on the Passeig de Picasso and inaugurated in March 1983, serving as a public tribute to Picasso's artistic and cultural influence.
