The Magic Fountain of Montjuïc: history, light and color at the heart of Barcelona

An iconic landmark with history

The Magic Fountain was inaugurated in 1929, during Barcelona’s International Exposition, designed by engineer Carles Buïgas. Since then, it has become one of the city’s most emblematic sites and a meeting point for both locals and visitors. The combination of water, light, and music has fascinated generations and accompanied some of the most important moments in Barcelona’s contemporary history, from the 1992 Olympic Games to major cultural events.

The timeline of its return

After almost three years of pause due to drought and a complete rehabilitation process, the Magic Fountain is back in action:

  • September 28 at 10:00 pm: the first major show of light, music, and water, integrated into the traditional La Mercè Piromusical.
  • From October 2 onwards: the Magic Fountain will resume its regular schedule, with shows every Thursday to Sunday, at different times, combining water choreographies with lights and music for all audiences.

The heart of the celebration

Within the framework of La Mercè, the Magic Fountain has always played a starring role. The light and water shows along Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina are among the most anticipated events for both Barcelonians and visitors, who gather to share a performance that blends tradition and emotion.

This year, the reopening of the Fountain coincides with the La Mercè Piromusical, dedicated to the group Estopa, promising an even more special night.

A tourist attraction and local pride

With millions of visitors every year, the Magic Fountain is one of Barcelona’s major tourist attractions. But it is also a place with a strong emotional value for locals, who see it as a symbol of celebration and community life.

Its reactivation is not only good news from a cultural and festive perspective but also a sign of optimism and recovery.
