10 Years of the Amatller House Museum: A Journey to the Heart of Modernism

Located at 41 Passeig de Gràcia, between Casa Batlló and Casa Lleó Morera, the Casa Amatller is one of the finest jewels of Catalan Modernism. Designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch, it combines architecture, decorative arts and a rich symbolic universe that captures the creative and cultural spirit of its time.

An anniversary to celebrate Modernism

This year, the Amatller House Museum celebrates its 10th anniversary as a public museum with a program full of cultural activities. During the months of October and November, visitors can immerse themselves in the aesthetics and daily life of the early 20th century.

Highlights include:

  • Special guided tours to learn about the history of the Amatller family and the transformation of the house into a true Modernist palace.
  • Thematic conferences on the legacy of Antoni Amatller, his passion for amateur photography, art collecting and the chocolate-making tradition of Chocolates Amatller.
  • Visits to the Montjuïc Cemetery and other places linked to the family’s legacy, available on Saturdays throughout October and November.

In addition, the anniversary program includes collaborations with the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC) and other institutions to explore the artistic and social influence of Modernism in Barcelona.

The Amatller House Museum, a window to the past

Antoni Amatller, a chocolate industrialist and passionate photographer, commissioned Puig i Cadafalch to remodel a bourgeois building into a unique residence. The result is a masterpiece that blends Gothic and Flemish elements, mosaics, stained glass and exquisite decorative detail — all of which can still be admired today, almost perfectly preserved.

Walking through its rooms feels like a journey back in time: from the entrance hall to the kitchen, every corner reveals how a bourgeois family lived during the golden age of Modernism.

A perfect plan for this autumn

The 10th anniversary activities are a wonderful opportunity to rediscover Barcelona’s Modernist heritage and experience the city from a new perspective.
The Casa Amatller is easily accessible by public transport — you can get there by metro or bus with the Hola Barcelona Travel Card — making it the perfect cultural stop on your autumn visit to the city.
